This side of the mural shows the level of detail that went into its execution.

In order for the painting to be convincing as a stone relief, it had to be carefully built up.
An initial all over stone paint finish had the rosettes applied to the outside of the panel, and then the soldiers were gradually painted over the surface with a mixture of glazes and more solid painting, until the painting was convincing.
